Home Insurance: A Must-Have for Young Professionals

student housing insurance

First job, new place? Don’t forget your home insurance!

Home insurance is mandatory if you’re renting a studio, apartment, or house—furnished or unfurnished. Whether you've just landed your first job or you're starting a new chapter, you’ll need to provide proof of insurance when signing your lease and collecting your keys.

Your landlord may also request this certificate annually, so it’s important to renew your policy before 31 August. Missing this deadline could result in your lease being terminated.

To comply with the law and cover your responsibilities as a tenant, you must take out home insurance that includes rental risk cover—protection against fire, explosions, and water damage.
However, this basic coverage does not include damage to your neighbours’ property (except in case of fire or water damage), nor does it protect your personal belongings or your personal liability in everyday life.

That’s why we recommend adding optional extras such as personal liability insurance, theft, glass breakage, or even computer equipment cover. These can all be selected easily during your online subscription

Frequently Asked Questions: Young Professional Renters Insurance

Who is eligible for the ADH young professional home insurance, and is there an age limit?

ADH young professional home insurance is designed for recent graduates starting working life, up to 3 years after graduation. There is no age limit to subscribe. That said, the coverage is especially well suited to tenants under 30 renting their first apartment in France. It is a practical renters insurance in France solution for young professionals, expats, and former international students signing a lease.

I just finished my studies. How can I maintain my insurance coverage now that I am employed?

To keep your coverage active, simply update your status in your customer account. Your policy will automatically switch to young professional home insurance while keeping your original coverage dates, up to August 31. This lets you stay protected as a tenant without any gap in coverage after moving from student status to employment.

How do I subscribe to the young professional home insurance after signing my first lease?

Subscribing is 100% online and takes about 2 minutes. After signing your lease, enter your apartment details and choose your coverage dates. You will then receive your insurance certificate by email right away, so you can send it to your landlord immediately. It is a fast and simple way to get renters insurance in France as a new tenant.

Do you offer a home insurance package specifically designed for young professionals?

Yes. Assuances Etudiants by ADH offers a young professional home insurance package built for first-time tenants in France. It includes core home coverage for common rental risks such as fire and water damage. Depending on your needs, you can also add options such as personal liability, theft, and glass breakage. It is designed to match the needs of young professionals renting their first home.

Does the young professional home insurance offer flexible contract durations if I move?

The policy runs on a fixed annual cycle, with coverage usually lasting until August 31. However, it remains flexible if you move before then. If your lease ends early, you can cancel or transfer the contract to your new apartment by sending your move-out inspection report. This helps tenants stay insured without hidden fees during a move.

Are my valuable electronics (computer, TV, etc.) covered against theft in my contract?

Coverage depends on the plan you choose. In the Serenity formula, theft coverage includes furniture and TVs, with a limit of €3,500 per insured room. For computers and related equipment, theft and accidental damage require the optional Office Equipment add-on, available with the Serenity formula. If you want fuller protection for electronics, this option is important for your renters insurance in France.

Is renters insurance legally mandatory for young professionals in France ?

In France, renters insurance is generally mandatory for tenants renting their main home, whether the apartment is unfurnished or furnished. At lease signing, the landlord usually asks for an insurance certificate covering basic rental risks such as fire and water damage. ADH young professional home insurance is designed to meet that requirement quickly and simply.

Can I purchase this insurance without a French bank account or a French permanent work contract (CDI)?

Yes. Based on your current ADH offer, you can subscribe without a French bank account and without a permanent French work contract. This makes the policy especially useful for expats, international tenants, and former students starting their first job in France. The goal is to make getting renters insurance in France simple, even during a transition period.

Are the insurance certificate and customer support available in English?

Yes, our customer support team can assist you in English to make your installation in France as smooth as possible. Please note that your official insurance certificate will be generated in French: this is standard procedure and exactly what your French landlord or real estate agency expects to see before handing over the keys.

Is this insurance certificate valid for the prefecture when changing my visa status from student to worker?

Yes, absolutely. In France, a valid home insurance certificate (less than 3 or 6 months old) is officially recognized by the prefecture and the ANEF as a primary proof of address (justificatif de domicile). You can confidently use the ADH certificate downloaded from your customer area to complete your visa change of status file or to open a French bank account.
